Abstract

Collective memory in indigenous communities, a strategy to build identity. Identity is a problematic concept, but necessary for social sciences. We set up a proposal based on Derridean difference to achieve an approach to this concept. We suggest some features of ethnic identity, a constantly rebuild concept, to handle it on a dynamic way. Collective memory is a determinant factor for identity construction, since it is based on the reproduction of traditions and customs as is strengthening the sense of belonging and group attachment. In this article we will consider some theoretical reflections on memory and its links to identity by using the case of a community located in Meseta P'urepecha, Michoacan. KEY WORDS: collective memory, social neglect, ethnic identity, P'urhepecha.
