Abstract

This article resorts to Marxism and Lacanian psychoanalysis to elucidate some aspects of the presidency of Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico. While the Marxist theoretical method allows to approach the capitalist rationality of the Peñista regime, Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory offers various conceptualizations of irrationality as reflected in the figure of Peña Nieto conceived as personification of capitalism: the historical decadence of symbolic paternity, the negligible absolute knowledge of power, the impenetrable specular self-consciousness, the imaginary confusion among the different, the absence of representation of the representatives, the division of the seemingly unitary subject, the imperative of deadly enjoyment and the impossible castration of our own being.
