Abstract

In this paper are analyzed, from the perspective of popular economics, practices implemented to access an urban space for housing by the residents of the People’s Colonia Lomas del Durazno, founded in 1985 in Morelia, Michoacán. In the analysis of this experience two stages are identified: The first, from 1985 to 1995, is characterized by the community integration process around building an identity based on the existence of a shared vision and a common project, and in implementing relevant strategies and collective practices. The second stage, from 1995 to date, shows a gradual dismantling of community cohesion and loss of collective practices, along with the proliferation of a number of micro-commercial ventures oriented to supplement the family income, these units operate largely subordinated to the dynamics of capital market, but also reveal the existence of alternative forms of work, which can be viable and allow a degree of autonomy in managing work processes and family resources.
