Abstract

This paper centers on the terms Civil Society, Civil Organizations (CO), and the New Social Movements (NSM) as spaces of citizen interaction that are addressed on behalf of common objectives. It includes a brief theoretical overview of the aforementioned concepts that leads to a case study: the achievements of a pro-environmental CO. Used as a way to underscore the theoretical and practical relevance of the terminology used, the case study also showcases the struggles of this organization in the defense of water as it joins other COs and NSMs in this effort. The paper also addresses the struggle fought by the organization on several social fronts and by a diversity of players in order to attain its goals.
