Abstract

In this paper, I will discuss the emergence of a hypermedia environment, namely, internet social networks, such as blogs, YouTube, Facebook, and mobile phone communications –used in combination with audio, video, photography, and other media– to enable a new type of reticular individualism and singular forms to appropriate the new media. The result is the emergence of forms of sociopolitical appropriation that tend to be projected in what I call here hypermedia networks of collective actions. Throughout this paper, I will refer to concrete examples of the use of these networks by suburban youths in Paris, communication networks in Mexico, and global networks for the protection of animals. In sum, I will propose a way to approach the subject from the tension-generating perspective of culture, conflict, and subjectivity.
