Abstract

For the last fifty years, several authors have argued that knowledge has become the engine of the economy. This phenomenon has been described as the advent of post-industrial society, as the knowledge economy or as knowledge society. The characteristics of this new economy, producing goods-knowledge, make it necessary to describe a system of wealth that, for some, it means the end of capitalism because their categories and principles have become irrelevant and meaningless. For others, with knowledge economy capitalism reinvents and rebuilds itself; now covers areas and activities that had resisted to its domination. The knowledge economy opens up a dilemma between two incompatible goals: to ensure the social use of knowledge, which is a source of wealth and individual and social development, or encourage and protect private producers of knowledge and their goods, as they are considered the basis of the knowledge economy. The answer to this dilemma will guide the development of our societies. Keywords: knowledge economy, weightless economy, hypercapitalism, dilemma of knowledge.
